Love is in the air, or is it consumerism? The stores are teeming with sweethearts purchasing roses, cards and chocolates. The economy will see a temporary boost in the service industry with all the date night reservations at fine eateries, and movie ticket sales will spike on this day for the latest romantic release. These are all good things, but lacking one critical point of reference -- this is a Christian Feast Day! Unfortunately, the culture has essentially lost the true meaning of the Feast of St. Valentine.

I am a second-generation Swedish American, which means that December 13th is known as Lucia Day in our household! St. Lucia's Day is a very popular holiday in Sweden, though it is not widely celebrated elsewhere. Whether you are Swedish or not, you might enjoy drawing from this culture's rich traditions.

In less than two weeks the Feast of St. Nicholas will be celebrated. It is one of great fun and inspiration because St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children and was known for his generosity to the needy. His feast is situated at the beginning of the Advent Season as we prepare to celebrate the great feast of the birth of Jesus on December 25th. What better saint than the patron of children and lover of the poor to help us to prepare for Jesus' birthday?
