During my time in Europe, I adopted the practice of making a "Rosary pilgrimage" for particular intentions or to celebrate feast days. The concept was simple: I would walk to five churches, praying a decade of the Rosary at each church. Since churches in the United States are not normally within walking distance of one another, I had not continued that tradition. However, this New Year, for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, I decided to set off to pray and see some churches in my diocese.

During the rainy weekend here in Washington D.C., I flipped through the instant movies on Netflix and landed on a movie called "Carolina." The movie focuses on the importance of family, no matter how quirky that family might be, and features Shirley MacLaine as the eccentric matriarch grandmother. What struck me about this movie was that during a flashback we see that MacLaine saved her granddaughter's life by preventing her son's girlfriend from having an abortion.
